How to Cut and Store Dormant Scions
How to Cut and Store Dormant Scions
(1) Carefully remove leaves and leaf litter from the plant materials.
(2) Cut each scion about 8″ long (pencil length and thickness). Aim to have at least 4 buds on each piece (see red arrows on the photo).
(3) Cut the bottom of each piece square and the top end at a diagonal so others can tell which end is up.
(4) Place all the scions of one kind together in a plastic bag. Put a few drops of water in the bag and then shake it out before putting the scion material in, so there is just a small amount of moisture. Seal the bag (knot, twist-tie, or ziplock).
* it is not recommended to place wet paper towels in the plastic bags
(5) Label each bag CLEARLY, for example: PLUM, Santa Rosa. Or APPLE, Wickson Crab.
(6) Store scions in the refrigerator (NOT IN THE FREEZER), or a COLD basement.
* stored scion woods away from fruits and Veggies
* the “optimal storage temperature” is 35°F – 38°F
